Children's Liturgy Series: The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

In today's Gospel we learn about how people are clever in getting what they want.  However, Jesus wants us to spend that creativity on doing things for God.

Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven we praise and glorify you. We thank you for bringing us together for this Children's Liturgy lesson. Please send us the Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with peace, love, and wisdom to understand your message for us today.  We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Gospel (Luke 16:1-15)

There was a rich man who had an accountant. The accountant was supposed to take care of the rich man’s money and things, but he didn’t do a good job. So the rich man said, “You can’t be my accountant anymore.”

The manager worried, “What will I do? I’m not strong enough to dig, and I don’t want to beg.” Then he had an idea. He went to the people who owed the rich man money. To one he said, “You owe 100 jars of oil. Tear up the old contract and write down 50 instead.” To another he said, “You owe 100 bags of wheat. Tear up the old contract and write down 80.” By doing this, he made friends with people which he can ask for help now that he is jobless.

The rich man was surprised, but he said the accountant was clever for making friends who might help him later.

Then Jesus said to His followers, “People in this world are smart about getting what they want, but I want you to be smart about doing things for God. If you can be trusted with little things in life, you can be trusted with big things. But if you are dishonest with little things, you won’t be trusted with big things.

Discussion

Jesus said if you can be trusted with little things in life, you can be trusted with big things. Lets come up with some examples of this:

Small thing: Putting away toys and keeping your room tidy without being asked.
Big thing: Mom and Dad trust you to help care for a new pet.

Small thing: Coming home on time from playing at a friend's house.
Big thing: Mom and Dad trust you when you ask to stay out a bit later.
