Hi, my name is Ashley, and welcome to the Summary to Evaluating Teacher Assessment and Evaluation. So what did you learn in this unit? In this final tutorial, we will recap the main focus of the unit. We'll review the teacher evaluation frameworks of Marzano and Danielson. We'll look at professional teacher standards and mention national board standards, as well as ISTE standards. We'll look at the strengths and weaknesses of teacher evaluation models, and lastly, explain the purpose of using evaluation models.
This unit analyzed the Danielson Teacher Evaluation Framework and the Marzano Teacher Evaluation Model. We reviewed the origination of each and looked at the domains and elements that make up the frameworks. Both models consist of four domains and other elements. These domains will be especially helpful for you during the evaluation process.
And the domains may sound very similar. We found that many of the evaluation models used across the country have been adapted from either Charlotte Danielson or the Marzano model, or even a combination of both. Lastly, the unit focused on the application of both models. We demonstrated how to use both Marzano and Danielson models through a series of reflective questions and related teacher activities back to the domains.
This lesson also focused on professional teacher standards. We now understand the purpose of using teacher standards is not only because it's mandated by No Child Left Behind and ESEA, but it's also to ensure teacher quality and that our students are receiving the best care. National Board Teacher Standards and ISTE standards-- we demonstrated how these standards were also related to the frameworks of Danielson and Marzano.
This unit provides information needed in order to identify the pros and cons of teacher evaluation models. Some controversies that surround teacher evaluation models are whether or not student assessments should be tied to teacher pay. State agencies are also concerned that evaluation results are manipulated because of inflation of scores. We also looked at major teacher unions, such as NEA and AFT, and what they say needs to be improved for teacher evaluations. Both organizations agree that teachers should have more say in the process.
Lastly, this unit identified the purpose of evaluation models in their benefits. Evaluation models are not just for the teacher, as you may think, but they're for students, as well as the whole school community. We defined the purpose of the evaluation models and use the Marzano and Danielson evaluation model to demonstrate how to apply them for when you go through the evaluation process.
As a result of the evaluation process, you may learn so much about yourself as a teacher. The evaluation process is to serve as a learning experience and time to reflect on your strategies and how you can make improvements. We also noted websites of states and districts that offer evaluation resources to help you prepare.
So let's recap what we discussed in this unit. We discussed extensively on the teacher evaluation frameworks, focusing especially on the models made by Charlotte Danielson and Robert Marzano. We define professional teacher standards and explained how they are mandated by No Child Left Behind and ESEA, but they are also used in assessing the quality of teachers. This unit identifies the strengths and weaknesses with the teacher evaluation models and offers suggestions from NEA and AFT on how teacher evaluation models can be improved to be more helpful. Lastly, in this unit, we discussed the purpose of evaluation models and how they serve in identifying teacher effectiveness, but they can also be used to allow the teacher to reflect on their teaching practices.
Congratulations, you have completed the unit when evaluating teacher assessment and evaluation. You are now ready to proceed through the evaluation process. I hope this unit has been helpful to you. As always, please refer back to the videos as needed and the additional resources section for further resources.
