The learner will be able to solve any quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula.
This tutorial is designed to help students become familiar with the math language used in solving the quadratic equation using the quadratic formula as well as providing tools to help remember and solve the quadratic formula.
Terms:
Quadratic formula: The formula that can be used to solve any quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0, where a does not equal 0 and the discriminant ( b² - 4ac) is > 0.
Discriminant: The expression underneath the radical sign in the quadratic formula, b² - 4ac, used to help determine how many real solutions there are to a quadratic equation. In order for there to be real solutions the discriminant must be > 0.
Roots: The solution(s) to a quadratic equation. Other terms that can be used to describe roots are solutions, zeroes, x-intercepts.
This is an easy way to remember the quadratic formula using a simple children's song.
