Children's Liturgy Series: Palm Sunday (Cycle C)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

In today's Gospel we learn about how Jesus gave His life for us, to pay for all the bad things people do on earth, so that we could have access to Heaven. We learn about how Jesus wants us to remember His love for us, everytime we come together at mass.

Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven we praise and glorify you.  We thank you for bringing us together for this children's liturgy lesson.  Please send us the Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with peace, love and wisdom.  Help us to understand how much you love us. Help us to know how to love others like Jesus loves us.  We ask all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Gospel (Luke 22, 23)

One evening, Jesus had a special dinner with His friends, the disciples. He took bread, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body." Then He took a cup of wine and said, "This is my blood." Jesus wanted His friends to remember Him every time they ate bread and drank wine.

After dinner, Jesus went to a garden to pray. He was very sad and asked God for help. His friends were supposed to pray with Him, but they fell asleep.

Some people who didn't like Jesus came to the garden and arrested Him. One of His friends, Peter, tried to protect Him but Jesus told him to stop.

Peter was scared and said he didn't know Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. Peter felt very sorry afterward.

Jesus was taken to the leaders who didn't believe He was God's Son. They were very mean to Him and decided to punish Him.

Jesus was made to carry a heavy cross to a place called Golgotha. There, He was nailed to the cross. Even though it hurt a lot, Jesus asked God to forgive the people who were hurting Him.

After some time, Jesus died on the cross. His friends were very sad. A kind man named Joseph took Jesus' body and put it in a tomb.

Jesus' friends thought it was the end, but three days later, something amazing happened. Jesus came back to life! This is why we celebrate Easter.

This story shows us how much Jesus loves us and how He wants us to remember Him and be kind to others.

Why did Jesus have to die for us?

Answer:

Jesus loves us so much that He wanted to help us. You know how sometimes we do things that aren't very nice, like telling a lie or being mean to someone? Those things are called sins. Everyone makes mistakes because nobody is perfect.

God loves us and wants us to be happy, but because He is also fair, there needs to be a way to make up for the bad things we do. Instead of making us pay for our mistakes, Jesus decided to do it for us. He died on the cross to take away our sins and to show us how much He loves us.

So, whenever you think about Jesus on the cross, remember that He did it because He loves you and wants you to be happy and free from all the bad things. Isn't that amazing?
