Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven, we praise and glorify you. We thank you for bringing us together for this Children's Liturgy lesson.  Please send us the Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts with peace, love, and wisdom.  Help us to understand the lesson you have for us today and to know how to live it out in our daily lives. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Gospel (John 6:37-40)

Version 1:
Jesus said to the crowds: “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

Version 2:

One day, Jesus got a message from His friends, Mary and Martha. Their brother Lazarus was very sick. They said, “Lord, please come quickly! The one You love is very sick.”

But Jesus didn’t go right away. He told His friends, “This sickness will not end in death. God will use it to show His power.”  When Jesus finally arrived at the town, Lazarus had already died and been buried for four days. Mary and Martha were very sad. Martha ran to Jesus and said,
“Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” Jesus said, “Your brother will rise again. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live.”

Mary came and cried too. Jesus saw how sad everyone was—and He cried. Even though He was the Son of God, He felt sadness too because He loved His friends so much. Then Jesus said, “Take away the stone from the tomb.” Martha said, “But, Lord, he has been dead for four days!” Still, they rolled away the stone. Jesus prayed and said, “Father, thank You for hearing Me.” Then He shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And out came Lazarus—alive! He was wrapped in cloth from head to toe, but he was walking! Jesus said, “Take off the cloths and let him go.”
Everyone was amazed and praised God. They saw that Jesus has power over life and death!

Jesus loves us deeply, even when we’re sad. He has power to bring hope and life where we think everything is lost. Nothing is too hard for Jesus!

Discussion

Who were Jesus’ friends in this story?
What happened to Lazarus?
What did Mary and Martha do when their brother was sick?
How long had Lazarus been in the tomb before Jesus came?
What did Jesus do when He saw Mary and Martha crying?
What did Jesus say to Lazarus?
What happened after Jesus said, “Lazarus, come out”?

How do we know Jesus loved Mary, Martha, and Lazarus?
Why do you think Jesus cried even though He knew He could fix everything?
What does this story tell us about how much Jesus cares for us when we’re sad?
