Children's Liturgy Series: 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches us how to be a good disciple. Jesus reminds us to take a good look at ourselves first before criticizing others.

Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven, we praise and glorify you. We thank you for bringing us together for this children's liturgy lesson.  Please send us the Holy Spirit, fill us with peace, love and wisdom. Help us to understand the message you have for us today. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Gospel (Luke 6:39-45)

Jesus told his disciples a parable,“Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.

Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.“

A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Discussion

1. The Blind Leading the Blind (Luke 6:39-40)

Q1: Jesus said, "Can a blind person lead another blind person?" What happens if they try?
A1: They will both fall into a hole!

Q2: What do you think Jesus meant by this?
A2: He was teaching that we should follow good and wise leaders, like Jesus, who know the right way to live.

Q3: Who can we follow to learn how to live in a way that pleases God?
A3: We can follow Jesus, read the Bible, and listen to good teachers like parents, pastors, and Sunday School teachers.

2. The Speck and the Log (Luke 6:41-42)

Q4: Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck in your friend’s eye but don’t see the log in your own eye?” What does that mean?
A4: It means we should not point out little mistakes in others if we have big mistakes ourselves.

Q5: What should we do before trying to correct someone else?
A5: We should look at our own hearts and actions first, making sure we are doing the right thing.

Q6: Why is it important to be kind and forgiving when someone makes a mistake?
A6: Because we all make mistakes, and God wants us to treat others with love and kindness.

3. A Tree and Its Fruit (Luke 6:43-45)

Q7: Jesus said that good trees grow good fruit, and bad trees grow bad fruit. What do you think that means?
A7: It means that if our hearts are good, we will do good things, but if our hearts are bad, we will do bad things.

Q8: What kind of “fruit” do good people produce? (Not apples or bananas, but actions!)
A8: Love, kindness, honesty, sharing, helping others.

Q9: Where do our words and actions come from?
A9: They come from what is in our hearts. If our hearts love Jesus, we will say and do good things.

Closing Prayer

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for teaching us how to be good followers, by surrounding ourselves with good people. Help us to always have good intentions in our hearts and to have the courage to act on those good intentions. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
