Children's Liturgy Series: 2nd Sunday of Lent (Cycle C)

In today's Gospel we learn about how Jesus transfigured and manifested his heavenly nature in front of Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor.

Father in Heaven we praise and glorify you. We thank you for bringing us together for this children's liturgy lesson.  Please send us the Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with peace, love, and wisdom.  Help us to understand the lesson you have for us today, and live it out in our lives. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,“Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said,“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

Who went up the mountain with Jesus?
Peter, John, and James went up the mountain with Jesus. Talk about how Peter, John and James were the same three disciples that were with Jesus at the Garden of Gethsemane.

What happened to Jesus' appearance when He was praying on the mountain?
Jesus' face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white.

Who appeared with Jesus on the mountain?
Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus.

What did Peter suggest they do when he saw Jesus, Moses, and Elijah?
Peter suggested building three shelters: one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

What did the voice from the cloud say?
The voice said, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him."

How did the disciples react when they heard the voice from the cloud?
The disciples were frightened and fell to the ground.

What happened after the voice spoke and the cloud disappeared?
Jesus was found alone, and He told the disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after He had risen from the dead.

What can we learn from this story about who Jesus is?
We learn that Jesus is God's Son and that we should listen to Him and follow His teachings.

Dear Jesus, 

Thank you for reminding us that you are the fullfillment of God's promises made in the old testament. Help us to remember your glory in Heaven, to give us courage in times when we are afraid. We ask all this in your name. Amen.
