Children's Liturgy Series: 2nd Sunday in Lent (Cycle A)

Author: Joyce Bott

Introduction

In today's Gospel, we learn about how Jesus was transfigured on Mount Tabor, how Jesus is connected to Moses and Elijah in the Old Testament, and how he uses this setting to give hope and strength to his inner circle of disciples who will need it when they're with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Opening Prayer

Father in Heaven, we give you praise and glory. We thank you for bringing us together today to worship you. Please send us the Holy Spirit, so we can understand the message you have for us today. Like Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor, give us the hope and courage we need to overcome any fear and temptation that faces us. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Gospel (Matthew 17:1-9)

One day, Jesus chose three of His closest friends—Peter, James, and John—and invited them to go with Him up a high mountain. The climb was long, but the friends followed Jesus because they loved Him and wanted to be near Him.

When they reached the top, something amazing happened.

While the disciples were watching, Jesus began to shine with a bright, beautiful light. His face glowed like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white—brighter than anything they had ever seen. The friends stared with wide eyes. They had never seen Jesus like this before!

Then, suddenly, two important people from long ago—Moses and Elijah—appeared and talked with Jesus. Peter got so excited that he said:

“Lord, it is good for us to be here!
Let me build three tents—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah!”

But while Peter was still talking, a bright cloud came over them. From inside the cloud they heard a voice—God’s voice—say:

“This is My beloved Son.
I am very pleased with Him.
Listen to Him.”

The disciples were so amazed and scared that they fell to the ground. But Jesus gently came to them, touched them, and said:

“Get up. Don’t be afraid.”

When they looked up, everything was back to normal. Moses and Elijah were gone. The bright cloud was gone. It was just Jesus again—calm, loving, and familiar.

As they walked down the mountain, Jesus told them:

“Don’t tell anyone about what you saw
until after I rise from the dead.”

Peter, James, and John kept this special moment in their hearts. They now understood even more that Jesus is truly God’s Son.
