Children's Liturgy Series: 1st Sunday in Lent (Cycle C)

In today's Gospel, we learn about how Jesus prepared himself for his pubic ministry by fasting in the desert for 40 days. We learn about how God's word is enough to fight off our daily struggles and temptations.

Father in Heaven we praise and glorify you. We thank you for bringing us together for this Children's Liturgy lesson.  Please send us the Holy Spirit. Fill us with peace, love and wisdom.  Help us to understand the life lesson you have for us today.  We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.He ate nothing during those days,and when they were over he was hungry.The devil said to him,“If you are the Son of God,command this stone to become bread.”Jesus answered him,“It is written, One does not live on bread alone.”Then he took him up and showed himall the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.The devil said to him,“I shall give to you all this power and glory;for it has been handed over to me,and I may give it to whomever I wish.All this will be yours, if you worship me.”Jesus said to him in reply,“It is written You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.”Then he led him to Jerusalem,made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him,“If you are the Son of God,throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”Jesus said to him in reply,“It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”When the devil had finished every temptation,he departed from him for a time.

Where did Jesus go after He was baptized, and who led Him there?
Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness.

How long did Jesus stay in the wilderness, and what did He do there?
Jesus stayed for 40 days and 40 nights. He was fasting and praying.

What were the three temptations that the devil presented to Jesus?
Turning stones into bread, jumping off the temple, and worshiping the devil for all the kingdoms of the world.

How did Jesus respond to each of the devil's temptations?
Jesus used God's Word to respond to each temptation and stood firm in His faith.

Why do you think it was important for Jesus to resist the devil's temptations?
Jesus shows His obedience to God.

What can we learn from Jesus' example when we face temptations in our own lives?
We can use God's Word and prayer to resist temptation.

How can we ask God for help when we are tempted to do something wrong?
We can ask God for strength and guidance when facing difficult choices.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for showing us what to do when we are struggling to resist temptation.  Help us to have the courage to pray and use God's word in times of despair. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
