Mountains are those that are higher and steeper than a hill.

There are four major characteristics of a mountain

  1. High, rocky land
  2. steep sides
  3. pointed or rounded tip 
  4. higher than a hill

A river is freshwater flowing across the surface of the land, usually to the sea.

Rivers 

The four major characteristics of a river are: 

  • flow in channels
  • begin in high sources such as hills or mountains
  • collects water from smaller streams
  • end in large bodies such as oceans, sea, or large lake

 An ocean is a large body of salt water. The ocean forms nearly 71 percent of the Earth's surface.

The characteristics of the Ocean are: 

  • extends to the depth of several miles
  • dark, cold, and murky

A Valley is a low area of land between mountains or hills, typically with a river or stream going through it. 

What are characteristics of a valley?

The characteristics of a valley are: 

  • Take the form of "U" or "V" 
  • Have a river or stream that runs through it
  • near vertical walls and narrow channel (Mountain Valleys)
  • shallow slope and wide channel (Plains) 

What is a Desert?

Deserts are areas where more water moves from the ground to the atmosphere. 

What are the Characteristics of Deserts?

The characteristics of deserts are: 

  • Very dry 
  • extreme temperature changes
  • can be cold (in Antarctica) 
  • less than 10 inches of rainfall
